Why Is X (Twitter) Not Working? 10 Fixes That Help
X not loading, search broken, suddenly in Spanish or showing errors? Find out whether it's X or your device, and get step-by-step fixes for each problem.

When X isn’t working, the first thing to figure out is whether the problem is X or you. If X is having an outage or heavy traffic, nothing you change on your phone will help, and the fix is to wait. If X works fine for everyone else, the cause is almost always on your side: a weak connection, an outdated app, a stuffed cache, a browser extension or a setting that changed without you noticing.
This guide starts with that quick test, then walks through 10 specific problems, from X not loading at all to search failing, the app suddenly showing Spanish or Chinese, limit errors and a timeline that looks nothing like it used to.

1. Check whether X is down, not just you
Why it happens: Sometimes X itself is struggling. According to X’s help center, limits may be temporarily reduced during periods of heavy usage, and X posts updates on its status site when that happens.
Fix it:
- Try another device. If X fails on your phone but works on a laptop, the problem is your phone.
- Try another network. Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data or the other way round, and turn off any VPN.
- Check X’s status site for updates if it fails everywhere.
- Wait it out. During a platform-wide issue, reinstalling or resetting settings won’t help and can create new problems.
2. The app freezes, crashes or won’t load
Why it happens: Old app versions and a bloated cache are the most common causes of crashes, blank timelines and endless loading spinners.
Fix it:
- Force-close the app fully, then reopen it.
- Update X from the App Store or Google Play.
- Restart your phone. It’s dull advice, but it clears a lot of stuck states.
- Clear the cache. On Android, go to your phone’s Settings > Apps > X > Storage and tap Clear cache (menu names vary by manufacturer). On iPhone, look for media and web storage options in the X app’s data usage settings.
- Reinstall as a last resort. Delete the app, reinstall and sign back in. Make sure you know your password and have access to your email or phone number first.
3. x.com won’t load in your browser
Why it happens: Browsers add their own layer of problems. Ad blockers, privacy extensions, strict cookie settings and stale site data can all stop X from loading properly, or break parts of it like video or the login page.
Fix it:
- Hard refresh with Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows or Cmd+Shift+R on a Mac.
- Open a private or incognito window. Extensions are usually off there. If X works, an extension is the culprit.
- Disable extensions one at a time for x.com, starting with ad blockers and privacy tools.
- Clear cookies and site data for x.com, then sign in again.
- Try a different browser. If X works there, your main browser’s settings or extensions are the problem.
4. Search isn’t working
Why it happens: X doesn’t document every reason search can fail, so this is partly trial and error. Common causes include a temporary glitch on X’s side, an outdated app, search filters you set and forgot about, or simply searching for posts that can’t appear. X’s help center says it may limit a violating post’s visibility, which can include excluding it from search. Posts from protected accounts are also visible only to approved followers.
Fix it:
- Try the same search on x.com and in the app. If it works in one, update or clear the other.
- Check your search filters. Make sure you haven’t limited results to people you follow or a specific location.
- Switch between the Top and Latest tabs in results. They show different sets of posts.
- Search for something simple to confirm search works at all, then go back to the specific query.
- Sign in. Some searching may not work the same way while logged out.
5. X is suddenly in Spanish, Chinese or another language
Why it happens: X uses a display language setting that can change after you get a new phone, reinstall the app, sign in on a new browser or change your device’s language. Occasionally someone else using your account changes it.
Fix it:
- Open Settings in X.
- Look for Accessibility, display and languages, then Languages. Exact names can differ slightly between app versions.
- Set Display language back to your preferred language.
- If the menus are in a language you can’t read, rely on the icons and the order of items, which don’t change with the language.
- If the language keeps changing back, check your phone’s or browser’s language settings too.
If someone changed it without your knowledge, change your password and review which devices are signed in.
6. You’re seeing a limit error
Why it happens: X limits how much an account can do. According to X’s help center, that includes 500 DMs a day, 400 follows a day, and daily limits on posts and replies. For unverified accounts, the help center describes 50 original posts and 200 replies a day, broken into semi-hourly limits, though other X pages give different figures. Limits count activity from all devices and the API, and may be temporarily reduced during heavy usage.
Fix it:
- Read the error. X says the error tells you which limit you’ve reached.
- Wait. Time-based limits reset after the period ends.
- Check connected apps. Scheduling tools and other API apps count toward your limits.
Our guide to X limits explained lists every published limit and where X’s own pages disagree.
7. You can read but can’t post, like or repost
Why it happens: This usually means your account has been restricted, not that X is broken. X may put an account in read-only mode, which temporarily stops posting, reposting and liking while you can still read timelines and DM followers. A limited account works similarly, and only your followers may see your activity.
Fix it: Look for a notice in the app explaining the restriction and follow any prompts. Our guide to X read-only mode explains why it happens and how to get out of it.
8. You see “Account suspended” or a locked account message
Why it happens: A suspension means X believes the account broke the X Rules; X’s help center says most suspensions are for spam, though real accounts are sometimes suspended by mistake. A lock (“Your account has been locked” or “Please verify your account”) is usually a security check for unusual activity, and too many login attempts can cause a temporary lock.
Fix it:
- Log in and follow the prompts. Locks usually clear after you confirm a phone number, an email code or a reCAPTCHA.
- If you’re suspended and think it’s a mistake, file an appeal while logged in to the account.
The full process is in our guide to X account suspended.
9. Your timeline looks different
Why it happens: This is the most common “how do I get my Twitter back to normal” question. Your Home timeline has two tabs. Following shows posts from accounts you follow. For you also adds posts from outside your network; according to X, those are chosen using signals such as popularity and how people in your network interact with them. If you land on For you, it can feel like a stranger’s feed.
Fix it:
- Tap Following at the top of your Home timeline.
- On For you, use the options on individual posts to mark them as not interesting, mute words or mute accounts you don’t want.
- If the layout itself changed after an update, that’s usually X’s redesign rather than a setting you can revert.
Our guide to how the X algorithm works explains what X says about recommendations.
10. Videos won’t play
Why it happens: Video is the most fragile part of X. A weak connection, autoplay or data saver settings, ad blockers or a deleted or protected post can all stop playback.
Fix it: Test one other video. If nothing plays, your setup is the problem; if only one fails, it’s that post. Check Settings > Accessibility, display and languages > Data usage if videos only play when tapped. For step-by-step fixes on iPhone, Android and desktop, see X video not playing.
When nothing works
If you’ve tested another device and network, updated or reinstalled the app, tried another browser and X still won’t cooperate, stop changing things. Note what error you see, when it started and on which devices, then check X’s status site again later or contact X support through its help center. Most problems that survive all of these steps are on X’s side and resolve without you doing anything.
Key takeaways
- Test another device and network first: it tells you whether the problem is X or you.
- Updating, clearing the cache and reinstalling fix most app problems; incognito mode and disabling extensions fix most browser problems.
- A sudden language change is a display language setting under Accessibility, display and languages.
- Limit errors name the limit you’ve hit, and time-based limits reset on their own.
- If you can read but not post, check for read-only mode or a limited account rather than troubleshooting your phone.
- Tap Following at the top of Home to get a timeline of only the accounts you follow.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my Twitter not working right now?
Either X is having trouble for everyone or something on your side is off, such as your connection, an outdated app or a browser extension. Test on another device or network first. If it fails everywhere, it's probably X, and waiting is the only fix.
Why is my Twitter suddenly in Spanish or another language?
Your display language setting has changed, often after a new device, a reinstall or a browser language change. In X, open Settings and look under Accessibility, display and languages, then Languages, and set your display language back.
How do I get my Twitter timeline back to normal?
The Home timeline has two views. For you includes recommended posts from accounts you don't follow, while Following shows posts from accounts you follow. Tap Following at the top of Home to switch back.
Why does X say I've hit a limit?
X limits how many posts, replies, DMs and follows an account can send, and it may reduce limits temporarily during heavy usage. The error tells you which limit you've hit, and time-based limits reset after the period ends.
Why can I read X but not post or like?
Your account is probably in read-only mode or limited. X may temporarily restrict posting, reposting and liking while still letting you read timelines and message followers.
