X (Twitter) Poll Not Working? 9 Problems and How to Fix Them

When an X poll “isn’t working”, the cause is usually one of a handful of rules or glitches: the poll icon is hidden because media is attached, the app is out of date, the poll has already ended, or the thing you’re trying to do — vote on your own poll, see who voted, add a fifth option — simply isn’t possible on X.

1. The poll icon is missing or greyed out

Why it happens: The most common reason is that the post already has a photo, GIF or video attached — the regular media attachment and a poll can’t be combined in one post. An outdated app or a third-party scheduling tool that doesn’t support polls can also hide the option.

Fix it:

1. Remove any media you’ve attached to the post, then look for the poll icon again.
2. Update the X app from your app store, or try x.com in a browser.
3. If you’re using a scheduling or management tool, create the poll directly in X instead.

2. You can’t add images to poll choices

Why it happens: X launched image polls worldwide in February 2026 — one image per choice, up to four — but the option only appears in up-to-date apps, and some users have reported it missing on lighter versions of the app.

Fix it:

1. Update the X app to the latest version.
2. Start a new post, tap the poll icon, then look for the image icon next to each choice.
3. If it still doesn’t appear, try the main X app on another device or the web.

X hasn’t published an official image size for poll choices. Square images tend to crop most predictably; keep the subject centered and avoid small text inside the image.

3. You can’t vote in a poll

Why it happens: Voting is blocked in a few situations:

• The poll has ended. Polls run from 5 minutes to 7 days, and voting closes when the timer runs out.
• You’ve already voted. Each account can vote once, and the vote is final.
• It’s your own poll. Creators can’t vote in their own polls.
• You’re not logged in. Logged-out visitors can see polls but can’t vote.

Fix it: Check the time remaining under the choices, log in, and make sure you’re not trying to vote in your own poll. If none of these apply, update the app and try again.

4. Votes or results aren’t showing

Why it happens: On X, people only see the current results after they vote. Before that, they see the choices, the total vote count and the time remaining. Counts can also take a moment to refresh.

Fix it: Vote to reveal the results, or wait until the poll ends — the winning choice is shown in bold. As the creator, you’ll see totals and percentages throughout. If numbers look stuck, close and reopen the post, or refresh the page on the web.

5. You can’t see who voted

Why it happens: This is by design, not a bug. X keeps votes private: neither the creator nor other people can see who voted or how.

Fix it: There isn’t one. If you need to know who chose what, ask people to reply with their choice instead of — or as well as — voting.

6. You need more than four options

Why it happens: X polls allow two to four choices, each up to 25 characters.

Fix it:

• Split the question. Run two polls in a thread, then a final between the winners.
• Use a bracket. Pit options head-to-head across a series of polls — people love following along.
• Shorten the labels. Put detail in the question, not the choices.

7. You made a mistake in a live poll

Why it happens: Polls can’t be edited — not with X’s Edit post feature, and not by the creator in any other way. The choices, question and duration are locked once it’s posted.

8. The poll ended too early or runs too long

Why it happens: The duration you set is final. The default is 1 day, and you can choose anything from 5 minutes to 7 days — but you can’t extend or shorten it afterwards.

Fix it: For live moments (a match, a stream), choose 5–60 minutes. For research or a pinned poll, go for 3–7 days. If a poll ended before you got the votes you wanted, post a follow-up poll and link the two in a thread.

9. The app itself is glitching

Why it happens: Sometimes the poll isn’t the problem — the app is. Slow connections, a full cache or a buggy app version can stop polls from loading, voting or posting.

Fix it:

1. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
2. Force-close and reopen the app.
3. Update or reinstall the app.
4. Try x.com in a browser to see whether the problem is device-specific.

When the poll works but nobody votes

A poll that technically works can still look broken if it sits at zero votes. The usual culprits are a vague question, unbalanced choices or bad timing. Post when your followers are online, keep the question readable at a glance, and pin the poll so profile visitors see it.

Some brands and creators also use vote services — including OnlyTwitter’s poll vote service — to get a new poll past the empty first hour. Purchased votes raise the total but don’t start conversations, and X’s platform manipulation policy prohibits artificially inflating engagement, so weigh the risk and never use them to misrepresent public opinion.
