X Spaces Not Working? Fixes for Joining, Hosting and Audio
Can't start, find or join an X Space, or the audio keeps cutting out? The real causes behind Twitter Spaces problems and step-by-step fixes for each.

When X Spaces isn’t working, the problem usually falls into one of three buckets: you’re trying to do something Spaces doesn’t allow (like starting one from a computer or from a protected account), your phone or connection is interrupting the audio, or a room setting such as speaker approval is working as designed. Very few Spaces problems are true bugs, which is good news, because most of them you can fix in a minute.
Below is a quick checklist, then the six most common problems with what causes each one and how to fix it. If you’re planning your first Space and want the full setup, start with our guide on how to host an X Space.
Quick checklist
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Use the X app on iOS or Android to host | Spaces can’t be started on the web |
| Make sure your account is public | Protected accounts can’t create Spaces |
| Update the X app | Old versions are a common source of audio and loading bugs |
| Allow microphone access for X | Without it, nobody can hear you even after you’re approved |
| Stay on one stable network | Switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data can drop the audio |
| Keep X allowed in the background | Battery and data savers can pause audio when the screen locks |
The rules behind most Spaces “bugs”
Many reports of Spaces not working are really these limits, all from X’s help center:
- Starting a Space: iOS or Android app only. Web users can join and listen but not start one.
- Who can listen: anyone. All Spaces are public, including to people who don’t follow the host.
- Speakers: up to 13 at once (host, up to 2 co-hosts and speakers). There’s no limit on listeners.
- Speaking: listeners request to speak and the host approves.
- Scheduling: up to 30 days ahead, with a maximum of 10 scheduled Spaces.
- Protected accounts: can join and speak, but can’t create a Space.
1. You can’t start a Space
Why it happens: The Spaces option simply isn’t there in some situations. The most common one is being on the web: x.com lets you listen, but starting a Space is only possible in the X app on iOS or Android. The second is a protected account, which can’t create Spaces. If you’re on your phone with a public account and still can’t find it, an outdated app is the likely cause. And if you’re trying to schedule rather than start now, you may already have 10 scheduled Spaces, which is the maximum.
Fix it:
- Switch to the X app on your iPhone or Android phone.
- Long-press the compose (+) button and tap Spaces, or start from the Spaces tab.
- If your account is protected, make it public before creating the Space. You can protect it again afterwards if you want.
- Update the app from the App Store or Google Play if the option still doesn’t appear.
- If scheduling fails, check how many Spaces you already have scheduled and whether the date is more than 30 days away.
2. You can’t find or join a Space
Why it happens: Spaces are live, so a Space you saw earlier may already have ended. You might also be looking in the wrong place, or opening a link in a setup that doesn’t handle it well, such as an old app version or a browser with strict extensions. Following the host isn’t required: all Spaces are public and anyone can listen.
Fix it:
- Check it’s still live. If the host has ended the Space, you can’t join it. If it was recorded, look for the replay instead (see problem 6).
- Look in the obvious places: your Home timeline, the host’s profile, the Spaces tab in the app, or the link the host shared by DM or in a post.
- Open the link in the X app rather than an in-app browser inside another app.
- Try the web if the app fails. Web users can join and listen, so x.com is a useful test of whether the problem is your phone.
- Update the app and restart it if Spaces won’t open at all.
3. The audio keeps cutting out or stops playing
Why it happens: Live audio is less forgiving than scrolling a timeline. A weak signal, a busy Wi-Fi network or your phone switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data can all cause gaps, robotic audio or a Space that stops. Phones also try to save battery by limiting apps you’re not actively looking at, and people commonly report Spaces stopping when the screen locks or they switch apps. X doesn’t publish a list of which phone settings affect Spaces, so treat the steps below as practical troubleshooting rather than official guidance.
Fix it:
- Stay on one network. Pick the stronger of Wi-Fi or mobile data and stick with it. If you use a VPN, turn it off and test again.
- Keep X in the foreground for a few minutes to see if the audio stabilizes. If it does, background limits are the likely cause.
- On Android, check your phone’s battery optimization and background data settings for X and let it run without restrictions. Menu names vary by manufacturer.
- On iPhone, turn off Low Power Mode and Low Data Mode while testing, and make sure Background App Refresh and mobile data are allowed for X.
- Force-close and rejoin the Space. A fresh connection often fixes stuck or looping audio.
- Check whether it’s the speaker, not you. If one voice drops out while others are fine, the problem is that speaker’s connection.
If video on X also stalls, the device-by-device steps in our guide to X video not playing cover clearing the cache, data saver and reinstalling.
4. You can’t speak in a Space
Why it happens: Listeners don’t have a mic by default. You have to request to speak and the host has to approve you. The room also has a cap: up to 13 people can speak at once, so if every slot is taken, the host may not bring you up until someone steps down. If you’ve been approved but people say they can’t hear you, your phone probably hasn’t given X access to the microphone.
Fix it:
- Tap the request option in the Space and wait for the host to approve it.
- Once you’re a speaker, check you’ve unmuted yourself in the Space.
- Open your phone’s settings, find X, and turn on Microphone access. Then leave and rejoin the Space.
- Check your phone isn’t routing audio to a Bluetooth headset you’re not wearing.
- If you’re on the web, test from the mobile app instead. If you plan to speak, the app is the safer bet.
If you’re the host: approve requests from the speaker list, and move quiet speakers back to listener to free slots. A co-host can watch the request queue so nobody waits unnoticed.
5. Your Space isn’t showing up for followers
Why it happens: All Spaces are public, but that doesn’t mean every follower will see yours. X doesn’t publish exactly how Spaces are surfaced in timelines, and a live Space competes with everything else your followers are reading. If people don’t know it’s happening, they won’t go looking for it.
Fix it:
- Post the Space when it goes live, and again partway through.
- Share the link by DM with the people you most want there, especially speakers.
- Schedule it in advance and share the scheduled Space as a post, pinned to your profile until it starts.
- Check your account is public. Protected accounts can’t create Spaces in the first place.
Getting people into the room is its own skill; our guide on how to get more listeners on X Spaces covers timing, titles and promotion.
6. The recording is missing
Why it happens: Spaces aren’t recorded automatically. The host has to turn on Record Space, and when it’s on, a REC label shows to everyone. If you didn’t see REC during the Space, there’s almost certainly no recording to find.
Fix it:
- Think back: did the REC label appear? If not, the Space wasn’t recorded and can’t be recovered.
- If it was recorded, check the host’s profile and the original Space post after it ends. Where replays appear can vary by app version, so update the app if you can’t see it.
- For future Spaces, make toggling recording part of your pre-start checklist.
- Remember that clipping is on by default, so short clips from the Space may exist on profiles even when there’s no full recording.
After a Space ends, the host can also see how many people attended, which is a useful benchmark to compare against the next one.
When the Space works but the room stays empty
A Space that runs perfectly can still feel broken if only a handful of people show up. The fixes are mostly organic: a clear, specific name, a scheduled time your audience is awake, speakers who bring their own followers, and promotion before and during the Space.
Some hosts also use a listener service, such as OnlyTwitter’s Space listener service, to avoid starting in a visibly empty room. Paid listeners raise the number on screen, but they aren’t an audience: they won’t ask questions or come back next week. X’s platform manipulation policy also prohibits artificially inflating engagement, so weigh that risk before you use one.
Key takeaways
- Spaces can only be started from the X app on iOS or Android, and protected accounts can’t create them.
- Anyone can join and listen, including on the web and without following the host.
- Audio drops usually come from unstable networks or phone battery and background limits. Stay on one network and let X run in the background.
- To speak, request the mic, wait for host approval and make sure X has microphone permission.
- Recordings only exist if the host turned on Record Space; look for the REC label.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't I start a Space on X?
According to X's help center, Spaces can only be started from the X app on iOS or Android. You can't start one on the web, and protected accounts can't create Spaces at all, so switch to the mobile app and make sure your account is public.
How do I join an X Space?
Tap the Space when it appears in your timeline, on the host's profile, in the Spaces tab or from a shared link. All Spaces are public, so you don't need to follow the host, and you can listen on the web as well as in the app.
Why does my X Space keep cutting out?
The most common causes are a weak or switching connection and your phone limiting the app in the background, for example through battery saver or background data restrictions. Stay on one stable network, keep X open, and allow it to run in the background.
Why can't I speak in an X Space?
Listeners have to request to speak and the host has to approve the request. If you've been approved but nobody can hear you, check that X has permission to use your microphone in your phone's settings.
Can protected accounts join X Spaces?
Yes. Protected accounts can join Spaces and speak in them. They just can't create their own Space until the account is made public.
Why can't I find the recording of my Space?
Recording only happens if the host turned on Record Space. If it wasn't on, there's no replay to find. When it was on, a REC label showed during the Space.
